This is one of the most important facts every Indian pilgrim planning Umrah must understand: there is no visa-on-arrival option for Umrah. Arriving at Jeddah or Madinah airport without a pre-approved Umrah visa will result in being denied boarding by your airline in India, or being turned back at Saudi immigration if you somehow board.
Why There Is No Umrah Visa on Arrival
Saudi Arabia controls Umrah pilgrim access through a pre-approval system managed by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. This system:
- Verifies that all pilgrims have the required vaccinations before entry
- Ensures pilgrims have confirmed accommodation in Makkah
- Controls the total number of pilgrims entering during peak periods
- Allows for security screening before pilgrims arrive in the country
A visa-on-arrival system would bypass all of these checks, which is why Saudi Arabia does not offer it for Umrah pilgrims.
What You Must Have Before Travelling
Before flying to Saudi Arabia for Umrah, you must have:
- An approved Umrah e-visa delivered to your email
- A printed or digital copy of the e-visa to show at check-in and immigration
- A valid Indian passport matching the name on the e-visa
- Your vaccination certificate (required for boarding and at immigration)
Airlines operating flights to Saudi Arabia are required to verify visa documents before boarding passengers. If you do not have an approved visa, you will be denied boarding at the Indian airport.
How Long Does It Take to Get an Umrah Visa?
- Standard processing: 3–5 business days
- Express processing: 24–48 hours
Apply well in advance of your travel date. During Ramadan and school holiday periods, processing can take longer due to higher application volumes.
What About Saudi Tourist Visas?
Saudi Arabia does offer on-arrival visa facilities and e-visas for tourists from certain countries. However, India is not on the visa-on-arrival list. Indian nationals must obtain a Saudi visa (tourist, business, or Umrah) before travelling to Saudi Arabia regardless of the purpose of visit.
Note: A tourist visa does not permit Umrah — if you enter Saudi Arabia on a tourist visa, you are not permitted to perform Umrah rituals. You must specifically hold an Umrah visa.
What to Do If Your Travel Date Is Approaching
If your travel date is within 5 days:
- Apply immediately using the express processing option (₹4,999, 24–48 hours)
- Contact our support team to explain the urgency
- Check that all your documents are ready to upload immediately — any corrections will cause further delay
Do not assume you can sort out the visa at the airport. There is no mechanism to do so.
