Passport Requirements for Umrah Visa from India

Detailed passport requirements for Umrah visa applications from India — minimum validity, blank pages, name matching, damaged passports, and Tatkal renewal.

Last updated:

Minimum Validity Requirement

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended travel date to Saudi Arabia — not beyond your return date, but beyond your departure date from India.

Example: If you plan to travel on 1 September 2025, your passport must not expire before 1 March 2026.

This 6-month rule applies even if you are planning a short 10-day trip. Saudi immigration will check this at the airport and refuse entry if your passport does not meet the requirement.

Blank Pages Required

Your passport must have at least 2 consecutively blank pages available for immigration stamps. Saudi immigration officers stamp your passport on entry and exit.

If you have travelled extensively and your passport has fewer than 2 blank pages, you must renew your passport before applying for the Umrah visa. Running out of pages during travel is a serious inconvenience that can cause you to miss flights.

Physical Condition of Passport

Saudi immigration is strict about the physical condition of passports. Your passport must:

  • Have no torn or missing pages
  • Have no water damage, staining, or discolouration
  • Have all text fully legible — no fading or smudging
  • Have all lamination intact — peeling lamination on the bio data page is a serious issue
  • Have the correct number of pages (replacing missing pages is not possible; you must renew)
  • Not have any unofficial markings, stamps, or writing added by you

A passport that has been washed, sat in a wet pocket, or has a bent cover may still technically be functional, but if the bio data page is unclear or damaged, you should renew it.

Name Matching Across Documents

The name on your passport must exactly match the name on:

  • Your airline ticket
  • Your hotel booking confirmation
  • Your Umrah visa application form

Even minor differences — an extra middle name, a different spelling of a surname, or a hyphen that is present in one document but not another — can cause rejection or problems at immigration.

Common name mismatch situations:

  • Expanded names: Airline ticket shows "Mohammed Siddique Zain" but passport shows "M.S. Zain" — this is a mismatch
  • Different transliterations: "Khadija" in the passport vs "Khadijah" on the ticket — this may or may not be flagged depending on the officer
  • Title inclusion: "Dr. Ahmed Khan" on the ticket vs "Ahmed Khan" on the passport
  • Married name vs maiden name: Women who have changed their surname after marriage must ensure all documents use the name in the current passport

If you notice a discrepancy, correct it on the airline ticket (usually possible at no charge within 24 hours of booking) or contact your agent.

What If My Passport Is Expiring Soon?

If your passport expires within 6 months of your intended travel date, renew it before booking your trip. Do not apply for an Umrah visa with a passport that does not meet the validity requirement — the visa will be issued against your passport number and will be invalid if your passport changes.

Steps to renew before an Umrah trip:

  1. Apply online through the Passport Seva portal (passportindia.gov.in)
  2. Select Tatkal (urgent) processing for faster turnaround
  3. Visit your Regional Passport Office (RPO) or Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) on your appointment date
  4. Receive your new passport within 1–3 days (Tatkal) or 2–4 weeks (normal)

Only then apply for the Umrah visa using your new passport number.

Old vs. New Passport — Which to Use?

If you have recently renewed your passport, always use the new (current) passport for your Umrah visa application. Your visa is stamped or electronically linked to your current passport number.

If your Umrah visa was issued on your old passport and you have since obtained a new passport, you may need to reapply — contact your agent or the Saudi visa authority to confirm the procedure.

Damaged or Worn Passport — What to Do

If your passport shows signs of heavy wear but all information is still legible, you may still be able to travel. However, the risk of immigration refusal at the airport increases significantly with a visibly damaged passport.

Recommended action if passport is damaged:

  • Visit your nearest Passport Seva Kendra and request a fresh passport on grounds of damage
  • Surrender the damaged passport and receive a new one
  • Apply for the Umrah visa only after receiving your new passport

The cost of being refused entry at a Saudi airport — missed flights, accommodation, and the cost of returning to India — is far greater than the cost of passport renewal.

Tatkal Passport for Urgent Umrah

If you need to perform Umrah urgently (due to an ill relative, a group booking made at short notice, or similar) and your passport needs renewal, the Tatkal scheme is your best option.

Tatkal passport renewal:

  • Book an appointment through Passport Seva under Tatkal category
  • Pay the higher Tatkal fee (approximately ₹3,500 for 36-page booklet)
  • Attend your appointment with a justification letter for Tatkal processing
  • Receive your passport within 1–3 working days (in most cities)

After receiving your new passport, apply for the Umrah visa. With express visa processing (24–48 hours), it is possible to have everything in place within 1 week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I travel with an expired passport if I have a valid Umrah visa? No. You must travel with the same valid passport that your visa is linked to. An expired passport will not be accepted at immigration.

My name in the passport has a spelling different from my Aadhaar card. Will this cause a problem? The Umrah visa is issued based on passport data, not Aadhaar. If your passport name is consistent with your airline ticket and hotel booking, you should not face an issue. Aadhaar is not part of the Umrah visa process.

Can I use a recently issued Emergency Certificate instead of a passport? No. An Emergency Certificate is not accepted for Umrah. You must hold a valid machine-readable Indian passport.

My passport has a Saudi Arabian arrival stamp from a previous trip where I overstayed. Can I still apply? An overstay on a previous Saudi visa is a serious issue and may result in a travel ban. Contact a specialist visa agent or the Saudi embassy to check your status before applying.

How many pages does a standard Indian passport have? The standard Indian passport has 36 pages. A booklet with 60 pages is available on request and is recommended for frequent travellers.
