Age is not a barrier to performing Umrah. Saudi Arabia welcomes pilgrims of every age — from newborns to centenarians. Understanding the documentation requirements for different age groups will help ensure your family application is processed without delay.
No Minimum Age
There is no minimum age for Umrah. Families regularly bring infants and toddlers. An infant who is just a few weeks old can technically accompany parents for Umrah, provided they have a valid passport and approved visa.
In practice, most families choose not to bring very young infants due to the physical demands of travel, the heat in Saudi Arabia, and the crowds at the Masjid al-Haram. But there is no legal or regulatory restriction.
No Maximum Age
There is also no maximum age. Elderly pilgrims in their 80s, 90s, and older regularly perform Umrah. Saudi Arabia has invested significantly in accessibility infrastructure at the Masjid al-Haram, including:
- Wheelchair-accessible routes throughout the mosque
- Wheelchair loan services at the mosque entrances
- Electric cart transport between key points
- Elevator access to upper floors
Many elderly pilgrims complete the Tawaf (7 circuits around the Kaaba) by wheelchair.
Age-Specific Documentation Notes
For Infants (Under 2 Years)
- Requires a full passport (many parents are surprised that infants need their own passport)
- Passport photograph requirements apply — the infant's full face must be visible on a white background
- Vaccination requirements: confirm with your paediatrician which vaccinations can be administered at the infant's age
- Birth certificate required with visa application
For Children (2–17 Years)
- Full passport required
- Individual visa application for each child
- Birth certificate required to establish parentage
- Both parents' details may be needed if only one parent is travelling
- Single travelling parent may need NOC from the other parent
For Elderly Pilgrims (60+)
- Standard application process — no separate senior category
- If the elderly pilgrim has chronic health conditions, a medical fitness certificate from a doctor is strongly recommended (not mandatory for the visa, but useful at immigration)
- Wheelchair assistance can be arranged through the airline and at the airport
For Pilgrims with Disabilities
- No visa restrictions based on disability
- Arrange wheelchair or special assistance with the airline during booking
- Saudi airports at Jeddah and Madinah have comprehensive disability support services
Does Age Affect Processing Time?
No. Applications for pilgrims of any age follow the same processing timeline: 3–5 business days (standard) or 24–48 hours (express).
