Understanding the Rituals of Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide

Umrah, often called the lesser pilgrimage, consists of four core acts of worship. Understanding each ritual in advance allows you to focus on the spiritual experience rather than logistical questions when you arrive in Makkah.

1. Entering Ihram

Ihram is both the state of ritual purity and the physical garment worn during Umrah.

Men wear two unstitched white sheets — one wrapped around the waist (izar), one over the shoulder (rida'). Women wear modest, loose-fitting clothing that covers the entire body. Women do not cover their faces as part of the ritual, though many choose to.

Before entering Ihram, pilgrims should:

  • Make a full bath (ghusl)
  • Apply no perfume or scented products after this point
  • Perform two rak'at of Salah al-Ihram
  • State the intention (niyyah): "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah"
  • Recite the Talbiyah continuously until Tawaf begins

Ihram is entered at the Miqat — the designated boundary around Makkah. For most Indian pilgrims flying into Jeddah, Ihram is entered before boarding or at the airport Miqat point.

2. Tawaf — Circling the Kaaba

Upon arriving at Masjid al-Haram, pilgrims perform Tawaf: seven counter-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba.

  • Begin at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), pointing toward it and saying "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar"
  • Walk at a moderate pace; men are encouraged to do Raml (brisk walking with short steps) for the first three circuits
  • Supplicate freely during Tawaf — this is a time for personal dua
  • After completing seven circuits, offer two rak'at of prayer at Maqam Ibrahim if possible

3. Sa'i — Walking Between Safa and Marwa

Sa'i commemorates Hajar's search for water for her son Ismail. Pilgrims walk seven times between the two small hills of Safa and Marwa, which are now enclosed within the mosque.

  • Begin at Safa, facing the Kaaba and making dua
  • Walk toward Marwa (count this as one)
  • Return to Safa (count this as two)
  • Continue until you complete seven lengths, ending at Marwa
  • Men are encouraged to jog between the green lights marking the valley

4. Halq or Taqsir — Cutting the Hair

The final ritual of Umrah is cutting the hair, which symbolises the completion of the pilgrimage.

  • Men (Halq): Shave the entire head — this is superior
  • Men (Taqsir): Trim hair from all parts of the head by at least a finger's width
  • Women (Taqsir): Trim a small amount (approximately 2.5cm) from the tips of the hair

After this act, the pilgrim exits the state of Ihram. The spiritual journey of Umrah is complete.

FAQ

Can I perform Umrah multiple times in one trip? Yes. Many pilgrims exit Makkah to the nearest Miqat (usually Tan'im, about 7km from the mosque), re-enter Ihram, and perform Umrah again.

What if I make a mistake during Tawaf or Sa'i? Minor mistakes can be corrected; for significant errors, a scholar or mosque guide should be consulted. The Saudi authorities have guides available at the mosque.
