9 Common Mistakes in Umrah Visa Applications from India

The most common mistakes Indian pilgrims make when applying for an Umrah visa — and exactly how to avoid each one before you submit your application.

Last updated:

Mistake 1 — Applying Too Close to Travel Date

Standard Umrah visa processing takes 3–7 working days. Many pilgrims apply just a few days before their flight and then face delays, leaving no time to correct issues if the application is returned for additional documents.

The right approach: Submit your application at least 2–3 weeks before your intended travel date. This provides a buffer for standard processing time, any document corrections, and re-processing if needed.

If your trip is within 7 days, opt for express processing (24–48 hours) and be prepared for a slightly higher fee.

Mistake 2 — Wrong Photo Background

This is the single most frequently cited reason for Umrah visa application delays. Indian photo studios often default to a light blue or cream background. Saudi Arabia requires a pure white background.

The right approach: When commissioning photos for your Umrah application, explicitly specify: "Umrah visa photograph — pure white background, 35×45 mm, no glasses." Confirm the background colour before accepting the photos.

Mistake 3 — Passport Validity Not Checked

Some pilgrims realise their passport is expiring within 6 months only after they have already booked flights and hotel. At this point, a Tatkal passport renewal is possible but adds stress and cost to an already busy preparation process.

The right approach: Before booking any travel — flights or accommodation — open your passport and check the expiry date. If it expires within 6 months of your intended travel date, initiate a passport renewal immediately.

Mistake 4 — Missing Relationship Documents

For women under 45, the mahram must be clearly identified in the application and the relationship must be documented. For families travelling together (especially with children), birth certificates and marriage certificates are required. Many applicants forget these and discover the oversight only when the application is returned.

The right approach: Use the document checklist at the start of your preparation. If travelling with family, collect marriage certificates and birth certificates for all members alongside passports.

Mistake 5 — Outdated Vaccination Certificate

The meningococcal meningitis (ACWY) vaccination certificate must be within the validity window specified by Saudi Arabia (currently 3 years). Many applicants who performed Umrah 3–4 years ago still have their old certificate and assume it is still valid.

The right approach: Check the date on your vaccination certificate. If it is approaching 3 years old, get a booster vaccination and a fresh certificate before applying.

Mistake 6 — Typos in Passport Name or Number

The application form requires you to enter your name and passport number exactly as they appear in your passport. Even a single character error — a transposed digit in the passport number, or "Amina" entered as "Amena" — can cause the visa to be issued with incorrect data, which then creates problems at immigration.

The right approach: After filling the application form, place your open passport beside the screen and read every letter and digit aloud to verify they match exactly. Do this twice.

Mistake 7 — Booking Flights Before Visa Approval

Some pilgrims book non-refundable or partially refundable flights as soon as they decide to perform Umrah, then apply for the visa. If the visa is delayed or rejected, they face significant financial losses or are pressured into submitting a rushed, incomplete application.

The right approach: Book fully refundable flights or use a travel agent booking with free cancellation. Apply for the visa. Only after the visa is approved should you convert to non-refundable fares or confirm fixed arrangements.

Mistake 8 — Applying During Hajj Season

Umrah visas are not available during the Hajj restricted period, which typically runs from mid-Shawwal to the end of Dhul Hijjah in the Islamic calendar. Applications submitted during this window will be automatically rejected.

The right approach: Check the Islamic calendar before planning your trip. The Hajj restricted period shifts by approximately 10 days each Gregorian year. Your travel agent can confirm exact dates.

Mistake 9 — Using a Tourist Visa for Umrah

Saudi Arabia now issues tourist visas to Indian nationals, and some pilgrims mistakenly assume these can be used to visit Makkah and perform Umrah. This is incorrect. Tourist visas do not permit entry into Makkah. Attempting to enter Makkah on a tourist visa can result in a ban on future travel to Saudi Arabia.

The right approach: Always apply for the Umrah visa specifically. A tourist visa is for leisure travel to permitted tourist areas in Saudi Arabia; it does not allow Umrah.

How to Double-Check Before Submitting

Before you click "Submit" on your application, work through this checklist:

  • Passport valid for 6+ months from travel date: confirmed
  • At least 2 blank pages in passport: confirmed
  • Photo is 35×45 mm with pure white background, no glasses: confirmed
  • Name on application matches passport exactly (letter by letter): confirmed
  • Passport number entered correctly (digit by digit): confirmed
  • All required documents uploaded and legible: confirmed
  • Vaccination certificate in English, within validity period: confirmed
  • Return airline ticket showing both flights: confirmed
  • Hotel booking confirming all nights: confirmed
  • Travelling outside Hajj restricted period: confirmed

Frequently Asked Questions

I made a typo in my application. Can I edit it after submission? Some platforms allow minor corrections before a decision is made. Contact your agent or the Nusuk support team immediately. If the application is already under review, you may need to withdraw and resubmit.

My flights are non-refundable and my visa was rejected. What can I do? Airlines and travel agents sometimes offer compassionate refunds or date changes for visa rejections — contact them directly with your rejection notice. Travel insurance with visa rejection cover can also help recover costs.

How can I check whether I am applying during the Hajj restricted period? Ask your travel agent, or check the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah website. Major Umrah booking platforms like Nusuk also typically show availability windows.

Is there any way to speed up processing if I applied too late? Most agents offer express processing (24–48 hours) at a premium. Contact your agent immediately and ask if this is still possible given your timeline.
