Getting your Umrah visa photograph right is critical. An incorrect photo is one of the top three reasons visa applications are rejected. This guide gives you every specification you need to get it right the first time.

Exact Dimensions

  • Width: 35 millimetres
  • Height: 45 millimetres
  • This is a standard international passport photo size
  • The photo must be provided in these exact dimensions — neither a larger photo cropped down, nor a smaller photo padded

For digital submissions, the file must represent these dimensions at adequate resolution. Use a minimum of 600 DPI when scanning printed photos.

Background Requirements

The background must be:

  • Pure white — not cream, not off-white, not light grey, not any colour
  • Completely flat with no visible texture or pattern
  • Free of shadows — no shadow from the subject's head, hair, or shoulders

What is rejected:

  • Blue backgrounds (most commonly confused with acceptable)
  • Grey or beige backgrounds
  • Any photographically altered/AI-replaced background (digital artefacts are detectable)
  • Backgrounds with any colour, gradient, or pattern

Important: Do not use smartphone background removal apps. Saudi visa photo verification systems can detect digitally altered backgrounds and reject them. Use a physical white backdrop when having the photo taken.

Face and Head Requirements

  • Full frontal face — eyes looking directly at camera, no tilting in any direction
  • No glasses — even prescription glasses, sunglasses, or photochromic lenses must be removed
  • No head coverings — no caps, hats, headbands, or turbans
  • Exception for religious head coverings: Women who wear hijab may wear it in the photo. The face must be fully visible from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, and from ear to ear.
  • Neutral or slightly pleasant expression — no open-mouth smile, no frowning
  • Eyes fully open and clearly visible
  • No hair falling across the face

Lighting Requirements

  • Even lighting across the entire face
  • No harsh shadows on one side of the face
  • No bright spots or overexposed areas
  • The face should be clearly visible with natural skin tone representation

Recency Requirement

The photo must have been taken within the last 6 months. This is enforced based on visual comparison with your passport photo and any previous visa photos in the system.

File Format for Digital Submission

  • Accepted formats: JPG/JPEG, PNG
  • Minimum file size: 100KB
  • Maximum file size: Check the upload form — typically 500KB to 2MB
  • Minimum resolution: 600 × 800 pixels (for 35mm × 45mm at 600 DPI)
  • Do not submit a compressed or thumbnail-quality image

Where to Get a Compliant Photo in India

Professional photography studios: Tell the photographer you need a Saudi Umrah visa photo. A good studio will know the requirements.

Large pharmacy chains: Some pharmacies with photo services can produce compliant photos.

What to ask for specifically:

  • White background (not blue)
  • No digital background editing
  • 35mm × 45mm print size
  • Digital copy on email or USB

What to avoid:

  • Passport photo vending machines (often use blue backgrounds)
  • Smartphone apps with background removal
  • Very small local studios unfamiliar with Saudi visa requirements

Common Rejection Reasons

  • Coloured or grey background
  • Shadows visible on background
  • Head covering (non-religious)
  • Glasses
  • Photo too old (more than 6 months)
  • Low resolution or blurry image
  • Face not fully frontal — even a slight angle can cause rejection
