Getting Around Makkah and Madinah: Transport Guide for Pilgrims

Efficient transport between and within the two holy cities makes a significant difference to your Umrah experience. Here is what you need to know.

Makkah to Madinah: The Haramain High-Speed Railway

The Haramain Railway connects Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah in approximately 2 hours. This is the most comfortable and reliable intercity option for pilgrims.

  • Book tickets via the Haramain app or website
  • Tickets sell out quickly in peak season — book before you travel
  • Trains run multiple times daily; check the schedule in advance
  • Luggage allowance: 23kg per passenger

Fare: Economy SAR 100–150 one way | First Class SAR 200–300

Getting Around Makkah

On foot: Most pilgrims staying within 500m–1km of Masjid al-Haram walk to the mosque. The Clock Tower complex is a useful landmark.

Shuttle buses: Free shuttle buses connect many hotels in the Aziziyah, Misfalah, and Shisha districts to the mosque during peak prayer times.

Taxis and Uber: Both are readily available. Agree on a price before boarding a non-metered taxi. Uber is generally more reliable for pricing.

Makkah Metro (Mashair Railway): Operates only during Hajj season — not available for Umrah pilgrims.

Getting Around Madinah

On foot: Masjid an-Nabawi is within walking distance of most Madinah hotels in the central district.

Al-Basmala Buses: Free shuttle buses connect the outer hotel districts to the mosque.

Taxis: Available outside the mosque gates; agree on fare in advance.

From Jeddah Airport to Makkah

Most Umrah pilgrims arrive at King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED). From there:

  • Organised transport: Your Umrah operator or hotel can arrange airport pickup
  • Taxi: Approximately SAR 100–150 to Makkah (about 80km)
  • Uber: Available from the airport; approximately SAR 80–120
