Travelling for Umrah with Children: What Parents Need to Know

Taking children for Umrah is a deeply meaningful family experience and can be the foundation of a lifelong connection to the pilgrimage. With the right preparation, it is entirely manageable.

Visa Requirements for Children

Children of all ages require their own Umrah visa. For applications:

  • Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian
  • Submit the child's own passport (Indian children's passports are valid for 5 years for those under 15)
  • Provide the child's birth certificate as supporting documentation
  • For children travelling with only one parent, a notarised letter of consent from the absent parent is recommended

What Age is Appropriate for Umrah?

There is no minimum age — infants as young as a few months old have performed Umrah. However, parents should consider:

  • Under 3 years: Very manageable in carriers. The mosque is large and air-conditioned; infants sleep well. Tawaf can be performed with the baby in a carrier.
  • 3 to 8 years: Active children may find the crowds overwhelming. A stroller is useful for Sai.
  • 8+ years: Children can understand the rituals and begin to participate meaningfully.

Rituals with Children

Children in Ihram follow the same ritual restrictions as adults, but with patience and gentleness in expectation.

For Tawaf, a child being carried by a parent counts as performing Tawaf with that parent. The parent's Tawaf is valid while carrying the child.

Packing for Children

In addition to standard Umrah supplies:

  • Familiar snacks and comfort items
  • Portable stroller (acceptable in the mosque's outer areas)
  • Baby carrier for Tawaf
  • Extra sets of Ihram clothing for boys old enough to wear it
  • Entertainment for transit (long-haul flights)

FAQ

Do children need to be in Ihram for Umrah? Children who have not yet reached puberty (pre-adolescent) may perform Umrah but are not obligated to maintain the strict Ihram restrictions. A guardian supervises the rituals on their behalf.

Is the mosque safe for young children? Masjid al-Haram is vast and can be crowded. Keep young children physically close, especially during peak prayer times. Use a safety wristband with your phone number as a precaution.
