Wheelchair Accessible Umrah: A Complete Guide for Pilgrims with Disabilities

Masjid al-Haram has made significant investments in accessibility infrastructure. Pilgrims using wheelchairs can complete all rituals of Umrah with appropriate support and planning.

Mosque Accessibility Infrastructure

  • Dedicated entrance gates for wheelchair users at all major gates
  • Lifts and ramps connecting all floor levels
  • Upper-floor Tawaf and Sai areas fully wheelchair accessible
  • Designated wheelchair lanes on the Sai track
  • Air-conditioned mosque interior on all floors

Wheelchair Hire and Attendant Services

The mosque provides free manual wheelchairs at its assistance desks near the main gates. Electric wheelchairs (powered) are available for hire at a fee through registered services outside the mosque.

Attendant services (pilgrims who push wheelchairs during Tawaf) are available. During peak periods, book a wheelchair attendant through your hotel concierge or a registered service — demand is high during Ramadan.

Practical Tips

  • Arrive early (45 to 60 minutes before prayer times) to secure wheelchair access and quieter routes
  • Upper-floor Tawaf is significantly less crowded than ground-floor — strongly recommended for wheelchair users
  • Wear comfortable, supportive clothing as you will be seated for extended periods
  • Carry water and snacks; the rituals take 2 to 4 hours

Visa Application

No special disability documentation is required for the Umrah visa itself. However, if your disability requires a medical device (oxygen concentrator, specific wheelchair), contact Saudi Airlines and your hotel in advance to make arrangements.

A doctor's letter explaining the medical need for any equipment is recommended when travelling.

FAQ

Can a wheelchair user complete all four rituals of Umrah? Yes. All four rituals — Ihram (the intention and garment), Tawaf, Sai, and Halq/Taqsir — can be completed by wheelchair users with appropriate assistance.

Is there a special area for disabled pilgrims at the Black Stone? During non-peak times, mosque staff facilitate access for wheelchair users to the area near the Black Stone. During peak periods (Ramadan, school holidays), this is not always possible, and pointing toward the Black Stone while in Tawaf is an accepted alternative.
