Umrah Visa for Children from India — Complete Guide

Can children perform Umrah? Documents needed, birth certificate requirements, who can accompany children, and tips for travelling to Saudi Arabia with infants and young children.

Can Children Perform Umrah?

Yes. There is no minimum age for performing Umrah. Infants, toddlers, and children of all ages can accompany their parents or guardians on Umrah. The pilgrimage is considered valid for children, and the rituals — Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba), Sa'y (walking between Safa and Marwa), and other acts — can be performed on behalf of young children.

Bringing children to Makkah and Madinah is considered spiritually significant, and Saudi Arabia actively accommodates families with children.

Age Requirements and Restrictions

There is no minimum age for an Umrah visa. Even newborn infants can be included in a family's Umrah visa application, though they require their own passport and documentation.

Key age-related rules:

  • All children: Need their own valid Indian passport regardless of age
  • Infants under 2: May not need a separate airline seat but still need a passport and visa
  • Children under 12: Biometric enrollment at immigration may be waived (confirm current policy)
  • Children over 15 (male): May serve as mahram for their mother if no other male relative is available (though this is a nuanced area — consult a scholar)

There is no maximum age — a "child" in the context of documentation requirements typically refers to unmarried dependents.

Documents Required for Children

Each child, regardless of age, requires:

  1. Valid Indian passport — Children must have their own passport; they cannot be added to a parent's passport under current Indian passport rules
  2. Passport photograph — Same specifications as adults: 35×45 mm, white background, no glasses, face clearly visible
  3. Meningococcal meningitis (ACWY) vaccination certificate — Required for children aged 2 years and above
  4. Airline ticket — For children aged 2 and above (infants under 2 may fly on a parent's lap without a separate seat, but still need documentation)

In addition to the standard documents, children require relationship documentation:

  1. Birth certificate — To prove the child's identity and relationship to the accompanying adult
  2. Parent/guardian's passport copy — To cross-reference relationship

Birth Certificate — When Is It Needed?

The birth certificate serves two purposes in the Umrah visa context:

  1. Proving identity: For very young children whose passport is new and biometric data is limited
  2. Proving relationship: Confirming that the child's accompanying adult is indeed the parent or legal guardian

Which birth certificate is accepted?

  • The original birth certificate issued by the municipal authority (Nagar Panchayat, Municipal Corporation) or the registration authority
  • An Aadhaar card showing both parent and child names is sometimes accepted as supplementary evidence, though the birth certificate is the primary document

Carry the original birth certificate and a photocopy. Some agents also ask for an English translation if the birth certificate is in a regional language.

Who Can Accompany a Child?

Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The accompanying adult must:

  • Be the child's parent (father or mother), legal guardian, or a close family member with written consent
  • Hold a valid Umrah visa
  • Travel on the same flights as the child

Mother travelling alone with children: A mother travelling without the father must carry:

  • Her own Umrah visa documents
  • Children's passports and vaccination certificates
  • Birth certificates showing her as the mother
  • A notarised consent letter from the father (strongly recommended, sometimes required)

Father travelling alone with children: Standard documentation — no additional consent required from the mother.

Guardian (not parent) travelling with children: Requires a notarised guardianship document or a letter of authorisation from both parents.

Umrah with a Baby or Infant

Travelling with an infant (under 2 years) requires special consideration:

Logistics:

  • Book a bassinet seat (bulkhead seat with crib) on flights when booking — these fill quickly
  • Pack sufficient formula, baby food, diapers, and medications in hand luggage — do not rely on finding specific brands in Saudi Arabia
  • Carry a valid doctor's letter if the infant has any medical condition

At the mosque:

  • Strollers/prams are permitted in certain areas of Masjid Al-Haram and Masjid Al-Nabawi but space is limited
  • Baby carriers (slings) are very practical for Tawaf as they keep hands free
  • Prayer areas have designated family sections where crying babies are tolerated

Vaccinations for infants: The meningitis (ACWY) vaccine is recommended from age 2 years. For infants under 2, confirm current Saudi requirements with your agent — exemptions or alternative documentation may apply.

Ihram for infants: There is no requirement for infants to wear the ihram garments. The parent's niyyah (intention) encompasses the infant.

School Leave for Umrah

Many Indian families plan Umrah during school holidays to avoid disrupting their children's education. However, if travel falls during the school term:

  • Most schools grant leave for religious pilgrimage, particularly Umrah during Ramadan
  • Submit a formal leave application to the school with your travel dates and reason
  • Obtain a leave letter from the school confirming the absence is approved
  • This letter is useful if immigration authorities ask about the child's travel

Some families time their Umrah for Ramadan (which shifts dates each year) — check the Ramadan calendar for the upcoming year and plan school leave accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 6-month-old baby need a visa? Yes. Every person entering Saudi Arabia, including infants, requires a valid Umrah visa and a passport.

My child's passport photo has them in a school uniform. Will it be accepted? No. Uniforms are not permitted in visa photographs. Dress your child in plain, non-white clothing for the photo.

Can grandparents take their grandchildren on Umrah without the parents? Yes, but additional documentation is required: a notarised letter of authorisation from both parents and the grandparent's proof of relationship to the parents (their birth certificate establishing who the parents are).

My child is 3 years old — do they need the meningitis vaccine? Yes. The ACWY vaccine is recommended from age 2. Children aged 3 must have the vaccination certificate as part of the visa application.

What is the stroller policy at Masjid Al-Haram? Strollers are permitted in outer areas but may be restricted inside the prayer halls and near the Kaaba. Baby carriers are more practical inside the mosque.
