Children & Minors
Age rules, guardian requirements, and documents for children performing Umrah
Can children perform Umrah?
Yes. Children of any age can perform Umrah with their parents or legal guardians. There is no minimum age requirement. An infant can be taken for Umrah. However, each child needs their own Indian passport and Umrah visa.
Does a child need their own passport?
Yes. Each child, regardless of age, requires their own separate Indian passport for international travel, including Umrah. Children's names are no longer added to parents' passports.
What documents are required for a child's Umrah visa?
Required documents for a child: (1) Child's own valid Indian passport, (2) Recent passport photograph, (3) Birth certificate (to establish parentage), (4) Parent or guardian's passport and visa. Both parents' consent may be required if only one parent is travelling.
Can a child travel with only one parent?
A child can travel with one parent, but Saudi immigration may require a No Objection Letter from the absent parent. This is especially important if parents are divorced or separated. Consult with us when applying if only one parent is travelling with the child.
What is the Umrah experience like for young children?
Very young children (under 5) may find the experience challenging due to the physical demands (Tawaf, Sa'i) and the heat. Strollers are not always practical at the Haram. Many families visit during cooler months and schedule activities during off-peak hours when crowds are smaller. Saudi Arabia has designated family sections in the Haram.
Can a child travel for Umrah without both parents?
A child can travel with one parent or an appointed legal guardian. If travelling with only one parent, a No Objection Letter from the absent parent is recommended and may be required by Saudi immigration. If the child is travelling with a guardian other than a parent, a notarised guardianship letter is required.
What vaccinations do children need for Umrah?
Children require the same Meningococcal ACWY vaccination as adults. The vaccination certificate must be in the child's name. For very young infants, consult your paediatrician as dosing schedules vary by age. Routine childhood vaccinations (MMR, polio) should also be up to date before travelling.
Is there an age limit at which a child needs their own Umrah visa?
Every person — regardless of age — needs their own Umrah visa to enter Saudi Arabia. There is no age at which a child is included under a parent's visa. Even an infant requires their own passport and visa.
Are children counted in the same Umrah quota as adults?
Yes. Each visa, whether for an adult or a child, counts as a separate application under the Saudi Umrah quota. There is no special quota or exemption for children. Each application is processed and approved individually.
What should I pack for a child travelling for Umrah?
Essential items for children: comfortable, modest clothing (boys should have white ihram fabric available), lightweight footwear suitable for marble floors, sunscreen (SPF 50+), a refillable water bottle, any regular medications with doctor's prescription, familiar snacks for the journey, and a small bag or backpack the child can carry themselves. Keep the bag light given the amount of walking involved.
